Dalvin Cook Domino: Cowboys Should Trade for Jets RB?

The Cowboys aren't in pursuit of Dalvin Cook, but somebody is making up stories involving him, Ezekiel Elliott and a Dallas trade for a New York Jets running back.

FRISCO - The Dalvin Cook Dominoes? There are two ongoing games being played. ... and now comes a rumor that creates the notion that the Dallas Cowboys are involved in those games.

Let's first examine the Pro Football Talk claim from Mike Florio that essentially has him saying he sort of knew all along that the New York Jets would end up "gaining momentum'' toward the signing of Cook.

From Florio: “The Jets have been gaining momentum as we get closer and closer to camp. The Jets were a team that I was aware of as a potential destination for Cook weeks before he was actually cut.”

Hmm. Cook could very well land in New York. But as a matter of record? There is no Google-able evidence that PFT "broke the story'' of the Jets being "a potential destination'' for Dalvin before he was cut. Bleacher Report talked about it in early May. So did NFLAnalysis. So did ... well, everybody.

Additionally, while Florio now boasts of knowing all along about Dalvin to New York "weeks before'' Cook was cut (meaning he "knew'' in early May) ... this was a transaction that occurred on June 8, and yet the media magnate was somehow on June 9 still floundering around with logical guesses, just like the rest of us.

Florio seemingly "knew all along'' about Cook - and seven total "potential destination'' teams! His list on June 9 (again, after he claims to have already nailed down Dalvin to the Jets):

  • Miami Dolphins
  • New York Jets
  • Buffalo Bills
  • Denver Broncos
  • Dallas Cowboys
  • New York Giants
  • Las Vegas Raiders

The Cowboys? The Giants? Florio even went so far as to report that "the Cowboys make plenty of sense. ... At a time when they’re leaving the door open for (Ezekiel) Elliott - a take that was wrong on both counts; as we've been reporting since the March 15 day Zeke got cut, the Cowboys have never planned to reunite with Elliott. Nor, as we reported during the time when Cook was exiting Minnesota did the Cowboys make any overtures there, choosing instead to stick with their $10 million Pro Bowl back Tony Pollard.

Florio also in that piece "reported'' on "the possibility'' of the Giants rescinding the franchise tag on Saquon Barkley, which we know from NFL sources has never been considered a "possibility'' by the actual team. (ESPN recently issued a report on Elliott replacing Barkley in New York, but Bristol could barely contain its own mid-report giggles.)

In the end, Cook - who is now suggesting he might want to be the highest-paid running back in the NFL - could sign with Aaron Rodgers' Jets. Or ... maybe not. But the muscle of PFT has caused other outlets to anticipate the next Jets' move ... and that's where the Cowboys get wrangled into this gossip again.

"If the Jets sign Cook and the Cowboys are truly looking for another running back,'' Heavy writes, "Dallas should absolutely look for a deal for Michael Carter.''

Whoa. How did we get here? The Cowboys, who already employ multiple candidates who can back up Pollard, now suddenly need to trade for a guy who, if Dalvin signs in New York, would be a Jets third-stringer?

Carter, 24, is 5-8. And 200 pounds. And was a fourth-round pick. Last year, he was the Jets' backup running back. While he is a speed guy, he averaged just 3.5 yards per carry - literally the worst in the NFL. (And yes, worse than Zeke's 3.8 YPC, the number often used to explain his decline.)

There is nothing about backup running back Michael Carter that separates him, in a positive way, from the four backup running backs Dallas already employs.

Rest assured, this is stuff being generated by media guessers, and not via sourced info from inside The Star. There is no "Dalvin to Dallas.'' There is no "Dalvin Domino to Dallas.'' And as is so often the case, chest-thumping boasts aside, there is no "knowing all along.''
