Does Jerry Jones Talk Too Much? 'Just the Dallas Cowboys' Way! Coach Mike McCarthy

Does Jerry Jones Talk Too Much? 'That's Just the Dallas Cowboys' Way! Coach Mike McCarthy

FRISCO - Once upon a time, NFL coach Mike McCarthy worked for a franchise that in a literal sense did not have a singular owner with a voice. Now, McCarthy is in his fourth year with the Dallas Cowboys and the GM - who also happens to be the owner, Jerry Jones - has a "voice'' that his critics would tell you never, ever, ever shuts up.

"That is, just frankly, the way this organization runs,'' McCarthy said this week when asked about working under Jones.

Jones, in part because he believes he is the best salesman for his product, and in part because he simply loves to talk, speaks to the media with great frequency; he is surely the most accessible billionaire in the world. He has for decades participated in two weekly radio interviews in addition to almost always meeting with us in the media after games.

We can tell you - "frankly,'' as McCarthy likes to put it - that the coach experienced some "culture shock'' over this in his early times in Dallas. But while appearing on Wednesday on SiriusXM's Mad Dog Sports Radio, McCarthy talked  about "the Dallas experience'' and his comfort level with it.

"I think it’s like everything in this league,'' he said. "There’s jobs and every job has a little bit different job description and job responsibility. That’s just, frankly, the way this organization runs.

"But my communication with Jerry and the relationship that we have and the ability to talk through things (is a positive). ... Jerry asks all the right questions.''

In the end, McCarthy insists that Jerry's "communicative leanings'' (our phrase) represents a positive for the franchise, as unorthodox as it may be.

"I think it makes everybody better,'' McCarthy said. "Because just like anything, you’re gonna have the conversations, the post-game conversations after the game. And I think it’s really healthy. I think it’s healthy for our coordinators and I think it’s just like anything, there’s a line of accountability that goes with it.''

OK. But what about the "media factor''?

Said McCarthy: "Now, the radio shows and all that stuff, that’s really just part of the job description of working here in Dallas.”
