Ezekiel Elliott 'Surprise'? Baldy's Cowboys Signing Prediction

"I think it's a strong rumor, I really do,'' Brian Baldinger says of Ezekiel Elliott signing with the Dallas Cowboys. "I believe there are legs to this rumor.''

FRISCO - It's hard to let go. We get it. The name "Ezekiel Elliott'' has been associated with Dallas Cowboys football since 2016, and deservedly so given his 8,262 yards and 68 touchdowns for the organization across his seven seasons.

But while we know it flies in the face of what national media folks continue to predict - they are crystal-balling that following Dallas' salary cap-savvy decision to cut Elliott, the Cowboys are in the market to re-sign the 27-year-old ballcarrier - we are stuck with the facts.

And the facts are this: The Dallas Cowboys are not planning a reunion with Zeke.

But what about NFL analyst Brian Baldinger joining the chorus of the national media observers who envision a reunion?

"I think it's a strong rumor, I really do,'' Baldinger said on Audacy's "Inside The Huddle'' podcast. "I believe there are legs to this rumor.''

We have great respect for Baldinger. But we are here to tell you that as of this writing, there are not only no "legs'' ... there isn't really a "rumor.''

Coach Mike McCarthy told us the other day that the decision to part ways with Elliott was pure 'caponomics,' or a move based on money (Zeke’s release meant a $10.9 million cap savings) more so than skill or fit. And while this rings true, it doesn't change that Elliott ... was cut.

We're not interested in roasting Zeke here. Nor are we interested in roasting those who envision his return. What they are doing, largely, is interpreting the  "door-open'' comments of McCarthy (and those of Jerry and Stephen Jones) as being a way Dallas is leaning ...

When in fact, what the Jones and McCarthy are doing is being appropriately respectful of a great player who "emptied the bucket'' here, as Jerry likes to say.

Can things change? Sure. A Cowboys running back could get injured or could prove to be inadequate. But that could also happen in 31 other cities. And there is at this time no "master plan'' or "secret movement'' or "surprise signing'' planned in those cities ... or in Frisco.
