'I Was Nervous!' Dallas Cowboys Coach Mike McCarthy on Surgery, Win Over Philadelphia Eagles: 'Didn't Miss A Beat!'
Despite having to undergo surgery to remove his appendix earlier in the week, Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy was adamant that he would not miss Sunday's marquee game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
As expected, the 60-year-old coach remained true to his word. That decision paid off in a big way, as McCarthy engineered a great game plan en route to a 33-13 rout over Dallas' arch rival.
After the game, McCarthy spoke on how the week affected him while giving credit to coordinators Dan Quinn, Brian Schottenheimer and John "Bones" Fassel for running the show in his absence.
"No issues — really, I just wanted to do my part," McCarthy said. "I just wanted to make sure that I was prepared as I normally am. I was a little nervous about it today, because it's a long year and we're all creatures of habit. You know, you go through these normal seven-day weeks and when you miss time …
"The coaches did a great job, and we didn't miss a beat and I think we demonstrated that tonight."
To those close to him, McCarthy's status was never in doubt. Quinn even asked reporters, "You think that tough Irishman is gonna miss this game?" just after news of McCarthy's condition broke.
After such a trying week personally, a statement win over the defending NFC champions is exactly what the doctor ordered for McCarthy and the 'Boys.

"It's about winning," McCarthy said. "It's always about winning but, you know, you've got to improve — you have to improve down the stretch here. You want to be playing your best football in December.
"I think we got off to a great start tonight."
