'I'm Not Cheating!' Cowboys' Ronald Jones Suspended for Heart Medicine?
"I just want to clear my name.''
Ronald Jones is presently scheduled to be suspended for the first two games of the Dallas Cowboys season due to a violation of the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances that the veteran running back claims is unfair.
"Everybody wants to say I'm on steroids and, clearly, I'm not,'' Jones said on Tuesday from Cowboys camp in Oxnard. "I'm one of the skinniest dudes on the team and in the league. ... It wasn't any steroid or anything to enhance my game. It was medicine prescribed by a doctor that I wasn't aware of.''
Jones, 25, said the medicine is a "heart stimulant" that he's been taking for quite some time, and that he is "disappointed'' at the NFL's unwillingness to accept his explanation.
"I'm not cheating the game of football,'' Jones said. "It's literally a prescription medicine. I asked for a re-test ... They didn't want to look at it. I think there needs to be more protection for players because if you're having health issues, I mean, we're human beings outside of football. ... We have real life issues, too. My family suffers from heart disease and things like that."
It is possible the suspension will impact Jones' chance of sticking with the Cowboys, who have Tony Pollard as the starter and then a competition involving Rico Dowdle, Malik Davis, Deuce Vaughn, Hunter Luepke and Jones. The punishment has naturally led to some speculation about the re-signing of Ezekiel Elliott, with Cowboys bosses Jerry Jones and Mike McCarthy not exactly on the same page there. (See story here.)
"I'm still gonna be out here working, through preseason and training camp," said Jones, a DFW native who signed with Dallas this offseason. "Just put my best foot forward and try to move on from this."
To his credit, Jones did acknowledge, "I'm responsible for what I put in my body ... It's something I've been prescribed over the course of my career ... Just gotta make sure it's not gonna happen again. ... I'm just confused how it came about, but I just wanted to clear my name.''
