Kellen Moore's Teaching on Dak Prescott; Will Cowboys Fans Ever Learn?

From coach Kellen Moore: “Dak Prescott has a phenomenal way of being able to deal with probably more than your average NFL starting quarterback. He handles it beautifully, and he’s certainly a guy you forever root for.” Are Cowboys critics listening?

FRISCO - Kellen Moore's recent NFL Network interview in which the new Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator praised the Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott is something we've covered.

Kellen thinks the world of Dak, essentially labeling him
"the great leader ever.''
And Prescott is saying all the right thing about the "mutual decision'' (that wasn't), announcing, “I’m upset but I’m happy for him.''

The subtle truth: Had Dak asked or begged or demanded that Kellen be retained, Moore wouldn't be in Los Angeles today working to mentor Justin Herbert. Nevertheless, the warm and fuzzies largely remain, as during a recent interview on “The Season With Peter Schrager,” Moore labeled Prescott as the “best leader” of any player or coach he has worked with during his career in football.

“The best person. I think the best leader I’ve ever been around, easily and, in all honesty, player or coach or anything,” Moore said on the podcast. “I think his ability to connect with a team in all spectrums is rare, and I’ve never seen it in any other way. His work ethic, his command, I think he’s incredible.''

This is big-time stuff, and in terms of NFL and Cowboys history, and Dak's legacy, important stuff. Every QB needs a Super Bowl win to cement his place in the annals of sport. But "the greatest leader ever''? That's a mouthful ... and by the way, no less a leader than Troy Aikman has told me the same thing about Dak.

But Moore said something else that has hovered below the radar ... understandable, as the "greatest leader ever'' thing earned its headlines. Forget the upside fact that Moore and Prescott and Dallas coach Mike McCarthy (who oversaw Kellen's cordial dismissal) worked together to produce in 2022 a Cowboys offense that was No. 4 in the NFL in points scored at 27.5 per game.

And also ... Forget the downside best-framed by McCarthy's now-infamous quote ...

Said McCarthy in a postseason review: “We didn’t have enough pass rush. And then we got into the playoffs, and we got into a shootout, and we got our (butts) kicked. … So my point is, I’ve been there, and he’s wired a little bit that way. I’ve been where Kellen’s been. Kellen wants to light the scoreboard up, but (in certain circumstances) I want him to run the damn ball so I can rest my defense.”

Seriously. Forget those and here this, via Kellen: “We’ve all been through that Dallas journey. He has a phenomenal way of being able to deal with probably more than your average NFL starting quarterback. He handles it beautifully, and he’s certainly a guy you forever root for.”

Kellen Moore is telling Cowboys Nation that Dak Prescott is a special person, and that "he's a guy you forever root for.'' Cowboys haters are not going to hear that. ... "Root Forever''? But maybe Cowboys lovers should.
