Niners RB Injured; Could Cowboys Ex Ezekiel Elliott Sign with Rival?
FRISCO - The last time we saw Ezekiel Elliott in a Dallas Cowboys uniform, the two-time NFL rushing champion was playing shotgun center in a desperation grab-bag ending to a playoff loss at the San Francisco 49ers.
Might the next time we see Zeke be with him wearing the rival's uniform?
Running back Elijah Mitchell is presently sidelined by injury, and maybe it's only a short-term thing, which might explain why so far, San Francisco has given workouts to a quartet of guys who might figure as short-term solutions to get them through the preseason. That foursome - Duke Johnson, Brian Hill, Jeremy McNichols and Jason Huntley - all have some NFL credentials.
But are any of them as viable as Elliott when it would come to backing up star Christian McCaffrey?
McCaffrey surely isn't going to play in this week's preseason Game 1 against the Raiders, and even if healthy, the oft-injured Mitchell probably wasn't going to, either. The 49ers can try to get through that game, and through camp and preseason, by using some of the four other backs on the roster. But we bet the Elliott camp is now monitoring the Niners' situation, just as they are the Dalvin Cook sweepstakes, as Zeke seems like the Plan B for the Patriots and Jets and others depending on what Dalvin decides.
And as for the Cowboys? They play preseason Game 1 on Saturday at home against the Jaguars, and even with Tony Pollard in mothballs and with Ronald Jones (groin, season-opening two-game suspension) in limbo ... no, the Cowboys still do not at this time plan a reunion.
