'Sign Ezekiel Elliott!' Fans React to Cowboys Suspension
It's very "emotional.'' It's not very "logical.'' But is it "trending.'' The Dallas Cowboys are at training camp in Oxnard absorbing the news that they won't have Ronald Jones as a candidate to make the season-opening 53-man roster ...
And some Cowboys followers believe that should signal the return of Zeke.
Jones, 25, is a native of McKinney and has Super Bowl credentials in the NFL, playing for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Cowboys have Tony Pollard as the new full-time starter and they drafted Deuce Vaughn out of Kansas State as a potential helper, along with young vets Malik Davis and Rico Dowdle.
“I tell you, I’m loving Rico Dowdle," McCarthy on Monday. "It’s great to have him back. Malik Davis has taken that jump that you’re looking for. Those guys really jump out. Obviously, we’ve got to get Deuce Vaughn involved, [too]."
It was weird that the coach didn't mention "RoJo.'' And now we know why. Is it also weird that fans are now fueling speculation that Ezekiel Elliott could return to Dallas? Nah. We get it. But that has never really been the Cowboys' position, as Zeke flirts with possible bids from the Jets and the Patriots.
The Cowboys' roster position was never about "Jones vs. Elliott.'' Jones was no cinch to make the team, at all. Nevertheless, yes, you can expect the Zeke speculation to fire up once again.
We will suggest that the Cowboys do not need to make another move following this suspension, as Jones was already a bubble guy in competition with Davis and Dowdle for the No. 2 job, with Vaughn seen as a likely No. 3 running back. But we will keep you posted. ... and if Ezekiel Elliott is back in this locker room - something Cowboys players would certainly celebrate - we will bring you that news. Not just the "emotional'' part. But also the "logical'' part.
