‘Be There Soon!’ Is Here: Signed Zack Martin Traveling to Cowboys Camp

What happened behind the scenes to seal the Zack Martin deal with the Cowboys? We’re told that as is often the case. “Jerry Jones happened.”

FRISCO - As we write this, Zack Martin is here in the Frisco area, packing a bag and readying to board a flight see Jerry Jones and his Dallas Cowboys management team … pen in hand.

So what about behind the scenes? Obviously, all along, Martin was planning to be a Cowboy; teammate Tyler Smith, his standout offensive line mate, offered up a revelation after one training camp session in Oxnard, disclosing the content of a Martin text to the fellas.

“You all set the tone,” Martin texted. “I’ll be there soon.”

Of course, that was on July 27. So “soon” took a while.

What else happened behind the scenes? We’re told that as is often the case. “Jerry Jones happened.”

On the first day of camp in Oxnard, Jerry responded to a CowboysSI.com question by stressing the "integrity of a contract.” And when we suggested a history of Cowboys flexibility - eventually - he chided us for being wrong.

But … we’ve been doing this for 33 years here, about as long as Jerry has been. And what happens - what happened here - is that Jerry rolled up his sleeves and got more personally involved.

And then a deal that essentially pushes Martin’s salary of about $14 million APY up to $18 million APY - happened.

We weren’t wrong in predicting that the Cowboys would budge. We weren’t wrong in citing Jerry’s history of giving in. And in the end? Jerry Jones is all sorts of "right'' for getting Zack Martin's "soon'' to arrive just in time.
