Back in Black: Philadelphia Eagles to Rock Alternate Jerseys vs. New York Giants
The Philadelphia Eagles are wearing their black alternate jerseys and pants against the New York Giants in Week 16 at Lincoln Financial Field, the team announced on social media Wednesday.
This will be the first time this season that the Eagles have worn the black jerseys, after wearing them three times a year ago. The reason is that the Eagles reintroduced their Kelly Green throwback uniforms this year, and made them their primary alternate uniforms. The Eagles wore Kelly Green in Week 7 against the Miami Dolphins and Week 12 against the Buffalo Bills, both games they won. Teams are allowed to wear alternate uniforms three times a year, so that left open a game for the black-on-black look.
Coincidentally, the last time the Eagles wore the black uniforms was last Christmas Day, when they donned them in a road loss to the Dallas Cowboys. While the Eagles obviously won't play every year on Christmas Day, perhaps wearing the black uniforms every year on the week of the holiday will become a tradition.
J.J. Watt, NFL World Praise Eagles Kelly Green Uniforms
The black helmets the Eagles wore a year ago with the black uniforms won't return. While the NFL eliminated their controversial one-helmet rule before the 2022 season, teams are still only limited to two helmet shells. The Kelly Green helmet is an entirely different shell from the primary Midnight Green one, and the Eagles would need an allowance for a third helmet for the black ones to return. Many people believe the Midnight Green ones offer a better contrast with the black-on-black uniforms anyway.
