NFL Power Rankings: Philadelphia Eagles Flying To Top Spot?
After suffering their first loss of the season in Week 6, the Philadelphia Eagles bounced back in a big way with a 31-17 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.
The Dolphins tied the game late in the third quarter 17-17 on a Jerome Baker pick-six of Jalen Hurts. Philadelphia responded with 14 straight points to seal a convincing win over of the AFC's elite. With the win over Miami, the Eagles (6-1) jumped to No. 1 in Sports Illustrated's Power Rankings.
"Everything we hear about the value of a run game, especially as we progress into the end of a season, is also true about the passing game," SI writes. "We just don’t talk about it as much. The beauty of having someone like A.J. Brown on your roster is that, like a physical running back, he is challenging the secondary with each catch. There is such effort devoted to keeping the ball out of his hands, and that strain is only multiplied when Brown has the ball and is barreling his way forward."
A.J. Brown has been otherworldly for Philadelphia and put together another dominant outing with 10 catches for 137 yards and a touchdown against the Dolphins. Brown has had five straight games with at least 127 receiving yards as he makes a push to be in the Offensive Player of the Year conversation.
Tight end Dallas Goedert had one of his better games of the season with five catches for 77 yards and a touchdown.
"Sunday’s win was a good reminder of just how deep the Eagles roster is," SI writes. "It’s not just Brown—Dallas Goedert, too, has a haymaker—with players in place around those two to stress defenses in different ways."
The defense put together a strong performance, holding the Dolphins to 244 yards, their fewest all season. Tua Tagovailoa completed 22 of 32 passes for 216 yards with an touchdown and an interception in the red zone by Darius Slay.
Philadelphia also held the potent rushing attack of Miami to just 45 yards.
Philadelphia will look to keep its momentum going on Sunday when they head to FedEx Field to face the Washington Commanders (3-4) for the second time this season. The Eagles won the first matchup 34-31 in overtime on Oct. 1.
