'NFL's Worst Team!' Philadelphia Media Rips Eagles, Calls for Coach Nick Sirianni Firing
Nick Sirianni's Philadelphia Eagles' regular-season collapse is now complete with a 27-10 loss that sends last year's Super Bowl entrant stumbling and bumbling its way into the postseason in a way that has Philly media critics labeling the Eagles as "the NFL's worst team.''
Philadelphia began this Week 18 needing a win and a Dallas Cowboys loss to capture the NFC East; there was an understanding that Dallas losing at Washington was unlikely, and indeed, the Cowboys did what they were supposed to do by crushing Washington.
The defending NFC champion Eagles? They did not do what they were supposed to do, falling to 11-6 ... which under normal circumstances might be acceptable.
But nobody thinks this is "normal.'' And Eagles watchers find this unacceptable.
Factually, as our Ed Kracz wrote on Twitter, "Despite being 10-1 at one point, the Eagles end the season at 11-6 and will limp into Tampa next week for a Wild Card playoff game.''
Eagles Embarrassed by Giants, Secure No. 5 Seed in Playoffs
Do that math. That means the vaunted Eagles won one game out of the final six. And now Sirianni's job security - in reflection of this meltdown - is in public question.
"Nick Sirianni should absolutely be on the hot seat," Bleeding Green Nation's Brandon Lee Gowton said.
"Nick Sirianni should be coaching for his job next week," Philadelphia radio host Joe Giglio declared.
"There's just no way Nick Sirianni's job is safe," The Birds Blitz wrote. "There is a difference between disappointment and epic, embarrassing collapse."
"The Eagles are playing so poorly right now that keeping Sirianni might not even be a choice at this point," Tom Kelly said. "This team has fallen off a cliff more than any can ever remember. Legitimately might be the worst team in football right now."
Our man Tim Kelly takes a generally reasonable view of the mess, and yet ...
"This is an embarrassing effort by the Eagles,'' Kelly wrote. "I've thought the talk about Nick Sirianni's future was over the top given they played in the Super Bowl a year ago. But it's starting to feel eerily similar to Chip Kelly's second season, and bringing him back didn't go well.''
