Eagles WATCH: Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown Show Out at Phillies Batting Practice
The Philadelphia Eagles had OTAs on Tuesday, but that didn't stop stars Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown from making the short trip over to Citizens Bank Park to get some batting practice in with the Philadelphia Phillies ahead of their game against the Detroit Tigers.
SI.com's Eagles Today was there to take in the action, as both guys got a chance to don some Phillies gear and step into the batter's box.
Brown, who was a 19th-round pick as an outfielder by the San Diego Padres in the 2016 MLB Draft, particularity stood out due to his effortless swing and impressive frame. Both he and Hurts sent some balls flying.
Take a look:
Brown committed to play both baseball and football at Ole Miss. He signed with the Padres upon being drafted, which meant he was unable to play baseball for the Rebels, but still went on to star in football.
“I was dead serious,” Brown said in 2022 of playing for San Diego, per The News Journal. “(The Padres) had reached out to me. They were about to invite me to spring training. They were just waiting on an answer from me.”
According to Sports Illustrated, Brown had a small contract with the Padres that had some unique incentives and requirements during a time when NIL still wasn't a thing.
Per SI:
The terms: Brown would still retain his amateur football status with the Rebels while in college, but he would also receive periodic signing bonus payments from the Padres, totaling $100,000, under the condition that he annually show up at Peoria Sports Complex—10 or so miles north of where Brown will face the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII—for about two days each year after school let out.
“Who knows?” Brown said. “Maybe when I’m done playing football, I’ll go play baseball.”
Brown and Hurts are likely to make more trips over to Citizens Bank Park before the NFL season starts. Hopefully the Phillies, who currently are below .500 at 28-32, rack up some more wins by then.
The Phillies currently lead the Tigers 1-0 at the top of the seventh inning.
