Eagles in Brazil: 6 Teams Philadelphia Could Play From Least to Most Likely

The Philadelphia Eagles will be joined in South America for the season-opener by a still-unnamed team; which one could it be? Here's a closer look.
In this story:

There are just five choices when trying to decide which team will play the Philadelphia Eagles in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Sept. 6.

Since it will be an Eagles home game, they have nine options, but you can likely eliminate the three NFC East teams – Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, and Washington Commanders.

That leaves six teams.

So, let’s have a little fun and handicap which team it might possibly be and why, from least likely to the most probable:

Panthers 100-1: No way it will be Carolina. The Panthers are already slated to play in Munich, Germany, this fall.

Jaguars 100-1: Jacksonville is the darling of London, at least that’s the way the NFL sees it. The Jags played twice there last year and will again this year. There’s just no way the league will have them fly to Brazil, too. No way.

Steelers 30-1: It doesn’t make much sense to move the battle of Pennsylvania, which doesn’t take place all too often, all the way to South America. These two teams have played just seven times this century, and while it has been a very good series, with the teams taking turns beating each other from 2004 to 2022, it’s probably safe to assume the NFL will let this one stay in Philly.

The final three teams are difficult to separate because my belief is it will be one of these three:

Falcons 5-1: Not sure how much juice there would be for this one, though someone on social media pointed out that maybe Atlanta will trade for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields, and wouldn’t that be a sweet matchup – Jalen Hurts vs. Justin Fields?

The last time that happened came on a brutally cold and icy day at Soldier Field two years ago in a game where Hurts injured his shoulder and the Eagles need some late-game heroics to pull out a win.

The problem is, the league has already begun making its schedule and the team may already be known, and a trade for Fields hasn’t happened yet. So, the NFL probably isn’t rolling the dice on that.

This matchup might have had a better shot of happening had the Falcons hired Bill Belichick to be their head coach. As it is, Atlanta feels the longer odds to go to South America of these final three.

Browns 3-1: A conference-crossover game makes a whole lot of sense since these games aren’t as important in the playoff picture as games within the conference. That’s why Cleveland has a good shot of happening. Also, maybe the league would like to see a Hurts matchup against Deshaun Watson.

Packers 2-1: When you talk about quarterback matchups this one between Hurt and Jordan Love is hard to beat. It’s also a game between two teams that made the playoffs last year. Green Bay was also the final team to ever play an international game, doing so in 2022 when they went to London.

Green Bay fans are just as passionate as those in Philly, and this would be a good way to open the season for both teams, their fan bases, and NFL fans everywhere.
