Eagles Offensive X-Factor: Player or Coach?

CBS Sports listed Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson as the team's offensive X-factor.

With only 16 days until training camp, new Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, will be tasked with replacing Shane Steichen, who departed for the Indianapolis Colts coaching job.

Given the importance of Johnson's performance for the Eagles' success this season, it is no surprise that CBS Sports listed him instead of one of the players as Philadelphia's representative when examining the offensive X-factors for each team.

CBS Sports specifically highlighted Johnson's responsibility for play-calling duties.

"He's the coordinator and the play-caller. And that's a new wrinkle. If he hits the ground running, things will run smoothly. If not, there may be some kinks to work out throughout the season," CBS Sports writes.

In 2021, the Eagles' offense experienced significant improvement when coach Nick Sirianni relinquished play-calling duties to focus on overall game management. This decision allowed Steichen to take over those responsibilities, resulting in successful outcomes. Now, with Johnson taking over, the Eagles will aim to sustain the same level of success that Steichen provided during his tenure as the play-caller.

Luckily for the Eagles, this won't be Johnson's first time calling plays. During his tenures as an offensive coordinator at the collegiate level for Utah and Houston, he served as the play-caller, leading both teams to average nearly 30 points per game. Additionally, during his time as the offensive coordinator at Florida, Johnson led an offense that averaged 40 points per game.

If the Eagles aspire to reach the Super Bowl for the second consecutive season, Johnson must seamlessly step into the role left by Steichen and ensure that Philadelphia remains among the league's top offenses for another year.
