Eagles Hire Newly-Retired DE To Coaching Staff
The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing back a familiar face to the organization.
On Monday, the Eagles announced that they have hired former defensive end Matt Leo as a defensive and football operations assistant. The hiring comes after the team put him on the Reserve/Retired list at the end of last month.
The 6-8, 280-pound Australian native started his collegiate journey at Arizona Western Community College. He leveraged his Arizona Western Community College game tape to secure an Iowa State scholarship. During his two seasons at Iowa State, he amassed 11.5 tackles for loss and three sacks, contributing to the team's participation in a bowl game in both years he was with them.
After concluding his college career, he joined the Eagles in 2020 through the International Player Pathway Program. He remained a member of the team's practice squad for several seasons. Despite not participating in a regular season game for the Eagles, Leo's presence within the organization for nearly three years in Philadelphia has secured him a position on coach Nick Sirianni's staff.
While Leo never succeeded during his brief NFL career, he has managed to forge a path in football after not having played a single down until his community college days. He now joins a substantial roster of former Eagles players who have transitioned to roles within the team's front office or coaching staff. In his new capacity, he aims to contribute to Sirianni's staff as the team aspires to return to the Super Bowl for the second consecutive season.
