Philadelphia Eagles' Jalen Carter On Wild Spike Catch Attempt: 'Saw It On The Internet'

Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter shared the inspiration for his catch attempt on a spike against the Kansas City Chiefs.

As time dwindled off the clock at the end of the first half, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went to make a routine spike to set up a field goal with three seconds remaining. 

What happened next was anything but routine as Philadelphia Eagles rookie defensive tackle Jalen Carter dove under the offensive line with outstretched arms in an attempt to intercept Mahomes' spike attempt. 

"I saw it on the internet, I seen it on YouTube," Carter said. "Some high school kid tried and he actually caught the ball. So I thought, that's a good idea and I knew they were spiking it, so I tried to go for it."

Carter was unable to catch the ball, but got surprisingly close, with his hands just under the ball as it hit the ground. On the ensuing play, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker made a 43-yard field goal as time expired to send them to halftime with a 17-7 lead. 

In the end, it was Carter and the Eagles defense that got the last laugh, shutting out Mahomes and Kansas City in the second half on the way to a 21-17 win. The two-time NFL MVP finished the game 24 of 43 for 177 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while also adding 38 yards with his legs. 

Carter registered three tackles, and his presence up front was felt throughout the game. This season, he has recorded 16 tackles, 4.0 sacks, five tackles for loss and two forced fumbles and has been one of the best defensive players in the league as a rookie.

Philadelphia drafted Carter with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of the University of Georgia, where he spent three years dominating college football. In his Bulldog career, he recorded 18.5 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks while helping the team win back-to-back National Championships. 

The Eagles and Carter will head home for a bout with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at 4:25 p.m.
