Eagles Long-Term QB Stability Improving With Jalen Hurts?
No quarterback? Big problems. The NFL is a quarterback-driven league and it's no secret that the best teams tend to be led by the best signal-callers.
Look at Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes for example.
But even better for a franchise is to have long-term stability under center. And according to CBS Sports' rankings, the Philadelphia Eagles could improve in that regard, as the Eagles are tied as the NFL's 12th-worst team in quarterback turnover rankings over the last decade.
The Eagles have had seven starting quarterbacks since the start of the 2013 season, which is tied for the fourth-most among all teams. To qualify for this list, a quarterback had to start at least four games in a season for a team.
Philadelphia's seven starting quarterbacks are Carson Wentz (68), Jalen Hurts (30), Nick Foles (26), Sam Bradford (14), Mark Sanchez (10), Michael Vick (6), Gardner Minshew (4.)
After signing Hurts to a new five-year contract extension, the Eagles clearly see that turnover rate slowing down, as they have a franchise quarterback for the first time since Donovan McNabb.
Hurts had a breakout season in 2022 when he led the Eagles to an appearance in Super Bowl LVII. He threw for 304 yards and a touchdown, and set the record for most rushing yards (70) and rushing touchdowns (three) by a quarterback in Super Bowl history.
Leading the league in quarterback stability is the Chiefs, with only two starting quarterbacks in 10 seasons (Mahomes, Alex Smith.) The reigning Super Bowl Champions Chiefs are favorites to again win the Lombardi Trophy with Mahomes on a 10-year lucrative contract.
Other teams with the most stable rankings have been buoyed by longtime franchise quarterbacks, like Aaron Rodgers (Packers), Matthew Stafford (Lions), Eli Manning (Giants), Derek Carr (Raiders) and Philip Rivers (Chargers).
All in all, with Hurts, Philadelphia now has it pretty good when it comes to security and dependability at quarterback.
