Eagles' Josh Sweat Has Big Plans for Kelly Green Uniforms
The Philadelphia Eagles plan to wear their recently-released Kelly Green throwback uniforms twice this season, Week 7 against the Miami Dolphins and Week 12 against the Buffalo Bills.
That's not enough in the estimation of pass rusher Josh Sweat.
"They need to be our permanent," Sweat said of the Kelly Green jerseys. "We can wear the black as an alternate. But the Kelly Green needs to be the main."
This is a sentiment that's likely to become more prevalent now that the Kelly Green uniforms are back in rotation, set to be worn for the first time since Week 1 of the 2010 season. But the Eagles may like it that way, as it makes the occasions where the Kelly Green uniforms are worn special. And why would they take Midnight Green out of the rotation when they can sell jerseys in that color and in Kelly Green under this arrangement?
Not to mention, Midnight Green is still a good look. The Eagles have done quite a bit of winning since introducing the darker shade of green in 1996, including capturing three NFC titles and winning the first Super Bowl in franchise history. It's kind of the same story as the team across the street has -- people love the Powder Blue throwbacks for the Phillies, but it works best as a complement to a strong modern uniform set. There's room for Midnight Green and Kelly Green to co-exist.
What's interesting about Sweat's statement is he seemed interested in making sure if the Eagles ever go back to Kelly Green on a full-time basis, the black alternate uniforms -- which he recorded a pick-six while wearing against the Dallas Cowboys last season -- stay in the rotation. The black alternate tops were first introduced in 2003. Beginning in 2014, they were paired with matching black pants. Last season, the Eagles added a black helmet as an alternate, though it's unclear if they will be allowed to have that black alternate helmet for this season since the Kelly Green alternate helmet will be their second lid already.
