Eagles vs. Patriots Week 1: Preview of Super Bowl 52 Rematch
With the Philadelphia Eagles' preseason ending after a 27-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts at Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday, its never too early to look ahead to the Eagles Week 1 matchup with the New England Patriots.
The defending NFC champions will be heading on the road to start the regular season, taking a trip to Gillette Stadium to take on the New England Patriots. Philadelphia is 5-1 in season openers since 2017 with its one loss coming to the Washington Commanders in 2020 when it blew a 17-0 lead.
The Eagles lead the all-time series against New England 8-7, but have only beaten the Patriots twice since 2000. One of those two wins came in Super Bowl LII, when Nick Foles out-dueled Tom Brady in a 41-33 thriller to give Philadelphia its first Super Bowl victory.
The last time these two teams matched up was in 2019, when Brady and Carson Wentz were still at quarterback for their respective teams. New England won 17-10 with its only touchdown coming on a trick pass from Julian Edelman to Phillip Dorsett. The Patriots finished that season at 12-4 while the Eagles snuck into the playoffs in a weak NFC East at 9-7.
Both teams look drastically different now, with Philadelphia coming off a 14-3 season and a Super Bowl appearance while New England failed to make the playoffs at 8-9 last year.
When Week 1 rolls around, the game will still feature an MVP-caliber quarterback, but it will be Jalen Hurts this time instead of Brady. Hurts finished second in MVP voting last season to Patrick Mahomes after missing two of the last three regular season games due to injury.
The Patriots will be quarterbacked by Mac Jones, who will be beginning his third NFL season. After making the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2021, Jones struggled last year, throwing for 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and going 6-8 as the starting quarterback.
The game is set to kick off at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sept. 10 from Foxborough, Mass. The Eagles are currently favored by 4.5 points on FanDuel and are -220 to win the game.
