Eagles Camp Day 6: Patrick Johnson Carted Off, Nakobe Dean OUT, Jalen Hurts' First INT
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia Eagles reserve overhang player Patrick Johnson suffered a scary lower-body injury before being carted off the practice field Friday at the NovaCare Complex.
The third-year SAM linebacker was favoring his lower leg as a pair of trainers loaded him onto the cart about 10 yards behind where Philadelphia continues the session, a stark reminder of just how unforgiving NFL football can be.
Johnson was visibly upset and a number of teammates wished him well as the cart departed for the injury tent.
More testing needs to be done and Johnson, 25, is still being evaluated, although the Philadelphia Inquirer did report that the injury is not expected to be a season-ender.
A 2021 seventh-round pick out of Tulane, Johnson was having a strong camp as an edge rusher at what is a very deep position for the Eagles. With Haason Reddick dealing with a sore groin and Derek Barnett still working his way back from a torn ACL, Johnson even got a few first-team reps alongside stalwarts like Josh Sweat, Brandon Graham, and rookie first-round pick Nolan Smith.
Johnson has spent most of his time rushing from the right side behind Sweat.
Both Reddick and Barnett worked in team drills for the first time Friday and Philadelphia also has a host of younger players with upside like Janarious Robinson, Tarron Jackson, and Kyron Johnson.
Over his first two seasons, Johnson has appeared in 33 of 34 potential regular-season games and produced 19 tackles, three quarterback hits, and nine pressures. He’s also been a key special-teamer with nine tackles in that phase.
-In other injury news, the two defensive starters who left Thursday's practice early -- Mike linebacker Nakobe Dean and cornerback James Bradberry -- were listed as day-to-day moving forward and their injuries were clarified. Dean is dealing with an ankle injury and Bradberry tweaked his groin.
Receiver Deon Cain (ankle) missed his third consecutive practice, while Reddick (groin), Barnett (knee), and slot cornerback Avone Maddox (toe) continue to be listed as limited.
-Smith got the first team rep at off-ball linebacker next to Christian Elliss but it was Elliss and Nick Morrow who got the majority of the work with no Dean. Shaun Bradley also got a few first-team reps and the big nickel three-safety look of Blankenship, Terrell Edmunds and K'Von Wallace was also used.
The situation at cornerback without Bradberry was much more concrete with Josh Jobe settling in opposite Slay. Jobe, a second-year player out of Alabama, has had a very good camp and is keeping both Greedy Williams and rookie Kelee Ringo at bay for the time being.
-The big on-field was that Jalen Hurts threw his first interception of the summer and the winner was five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay. The context was that Hurts was trying to force the football into Dallas Goedert down the right sideline in a desperation situation during a two-minute drill before halftime with only 15 seconds remaining and no timeouts.
Moments early, safety Reed Blankenship nearly got the first one when he undercut a route to A.J. Brown. His tipped ball, however, went into the hands of Brown.
-Hurts also got a talking to from Nick Sirianni when he didn't rise up and hand the football to the referee in a two-minute situation, wasting valuable clock.
-Olamide Zaccheaus had an up-and-down day as he attempts to chase down Quez Watkins for the third receiver role. OZ froze Ringo with a brilliant double move in one-on-ones but he also dropped at least three passes between individual and team work.
-The connection between Hurts and A.J. Brown has been something else this summer. The two have been particularly in sync on back-shoulder fades and comeback routes.
-The Eagles' backup centers -- Brett Toth and Julian Good-Jones -- continue to have one or two bad shotgun snaps each practice which has hampered the effectiveness of backup QBs Marcus Mariota and Ian Book.
-The quarterback running game with Hurts continues to confound Sean Desai's defense, especially in the red zone.
-In a somewhat weird sequence, the Eagles rested All-Pros Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson for some red-zone snaps and slid Cam Jurgens to center while inserting Tyler Steen at right guard and Jack Driscoll at right tackle.
-Michael Clay and his special teams group were working heaving on kickoff coverage today and they also got an opportunity to practice a late-game field goal situation by racing on the field for what was a successful 40-yard Jake Elliott field goal.
-The first live session of the summer came in the developmental period at the end of practice but lasted for two plays when Sirianni called it quits about 10 minutes early after a poor snap.
