Eagles Roster Bubble: RB Trey Sermon Trending Down?
The Philadelphia Eagles got their final look at several players vying for a spot on the 53-man roster during their 27-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Thursday night's preseason finale at Lincoln Financial Field.
Among these players was running back Trey Sermon, who has shown flashes throughout the preseason but once again failed to leave a lasting impression on the team.
Despite serving as the team's bell cow in the first half, Sermon struggled with efficiency. While the running back received 12 carries in the first half, he could only muster 19 yards and failed to significantly boost the Eagles' offense. His only real contribution in the running game was on a one-yard touchdown that was perfectly set up for him following a 73-yard return by receiver Devon Allen. Sermon concluded the game with 16 carries, amassing only 30 rushing yards, and added four receptions for 25 yards.
After Sermon's performance in the Eagles' 18-18 tie last week against the Cleveland Browns, evaluating his roster chances became challenging. He had a crucial fumble in the second quarter yet managed to redeem himself with a 33-yard touchdown run. By the end of the game, he had accumulated five carries for 54 yards.
As Sermon currently stands as the fifth running back on the Eagles' depth chart, the odds aren't in his favor. His lackluster performance in Thursday night's game following his outing from last week won't bode well for his chances of securing a spot on the team's 53-man roster. With the final roster cuts imminent in the upcoming days, Sermon will likely end up on the Eagles' practice squad, provided he successfully clears waivers.
