Philadelphia Eagles vs. Washington Commanders Week 8: How to Watch, Betting Odds
The Philadelphia Eagles make the short trip to Landover to face the Washington Commanders for the second time this season. It's the second matchup between the two teams in 2023 after a close 34-31 Eagles win back on Oct. 1 at Lincoln Financial Field.
Washington quarterback Sam Howell had his hands full in the Oct. 1 matchup and expects much of the same on Sunday. “We’ll definitely have our hands full,” Howell said. The Eagles have the second-most sacks in the league while Howell is the most-sacked quarterback. That should make for an interesting watch on Sunday.
Philly signal-caller Jalen Hurts is nursing a knee injury but is expected to play while the Eagles may have to depend more on their defense.
“(We) talk about every week of, ‘You’ve got to earn the right to rush the passer,’” Eagles defensive coordinator Sean Desai said. “The way to earn the right is to knock the run out. That’s a core philosophy of what (other coaches) believe in, what I believe in, what we believe in as a defense."
With Howell in just his second season and his first as a starter, the team has struggled to keep its offense balanced while Howell is taking so many hits and sacks.
“The sack problem is definitely an issue and we want to try to avoid that and try to limit those numbers,” said Howell, who's going into his eighth pro start. “But at the same time, I still want to go out there and play how I’m coached to play and still keep my eyes downfield and be able to locate those guys and not be too worried about the rush.”
