BREAKING: Falcons Cut RB Caleb Huntley Before Training Camp
The Atlanta Falcons are wasting no time making changes to their roster as training camp begins.
Atlanta is waiving running back Caleb Huntley, a source confirmed to SI's Falcon Report, citing the team's need for healthy bodies entering camp.
Huntley, 24, just reached the seven-month mark of his recovery from a torn Achilles sustained in Week 15, fresh off a breakout second season in which he recorded 366 rushing yards and a touchdown on 76 carries while emerging as a viable complementary ballcarrier.
Huntley's recovery has gone "according to plan," per source, and he returned to the early stages of on-field activities during OTAs. He was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list last week The Falcons were eyeing a full return to practice around the eight-month mark in late August.
The Falcons' coaching staff likes Huntley and has a good rapport with the former undrafted runner, which opens the door for a return perhaps later on in camp, as he has a "pretty good chance" of being fully healthy by the end of August.
Atlanta's running game ranked as the third-best unit in the league last season at just under 160 yards per game, with Tyler Allgeier and Cordarrelle Patterson joining Huntley as key contributors, and the addition of first-round pick Bijan Robinson only made the group stronger.
But ultimately, Huntley's lack of availability entering camp proved to be the determining factor - though the door remains open on a potential return.
