Falcons FB Keith Smith Arrested for Traffic Charges - Details
The Atlanta Falcons returned to football activities this week with the start of OTAs but now find themselves dealing with off-field matters.
According to Atlanta police, Falcons fullback Keith Smith was arrested Wednesday afternoon for "traffic charges" in Buckhead.
According to NFL Network, Smith received a speeding ticket last year, informed the Falcons, paid the fine and believed the incident was handled - but there was "miscommunication" and his license was suspended without his knowledge. He was pulled over Wednesday for an expired registration but was later arrested for driving with an expired license.
The Falcons released the following statement on Wednesday night ...
"We are aware of a legal matter involving Keith Smith this afternoon and have been informed of its details. We will have no further comment at this time."
Smith, 31, has played in all 66 games since joining the Falcons prior to the 2019 season. He re-signed with Atlanta on a one-year contract this March.
Nicknamed "Beef," the 6-0, 240-pound Smith played a big part in the Falcons' third-ranked rushing attack last season, often paving lanes both inside and out and proving to be particularly potent at sustaining blocks.
Smith, who caught one pass for eight yards and received one carry for two yards in 2022, has been dubbed by his coaches as "selfless" and a "quiet leader" throughout the locker room.
The former San Jose State standout also contributed on special teams, playing 60 percent of Atlanta's snaps in the game's third phase last year.
The Falcons will return to the practice field at Flowery Branch on Thursday. Further comments will be added as they come.
