LOOK: Falcons Reveal Week 2 Throwback Uniform vs. Packers
Whatever you think of the Atlanta Falcons current uniform rotation, just about everyone is fond of their throwback uniforms, mixed in on a few occasions each season. Week 2 of the 2023 NFL season will be one of those occasions.
The Falcons announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, that they will rock their black throwback uniforms with red helmets for a Week 2 tilt against the Green Bay Packers.
The red helmets the Falcons will wear Sunday were initially the team's primary lids from their inception in 1966 through the 1989 campaign. The red helmets were reintroduced as an alternate during the 2022 season, after the NFL ditched its controversial rule limiting each player to one helmet.
Meanwhile, the black throwback jerseys that will be worn Sunday afternoon were primary tops for the Falcons from 1990 to 2002, although in that era they were worn with silver pants and a black helmet. Now, they are paired with the red helmet and white pants.
Week 2 is the first of three times that the Falcons plan to wear their throwback uniforms this season. They'll also do so when they host the Washington Commanders in Week 6, and then again in Week 12 when the NFC South-rival New Orleans Saints visit Atlanta. A year ago, the Falcons wore these throwbacks twice. The additional game in 2023 seemingly accounts for the fact that the much-maligned red and black gradient uniforms have been phased out, according to coach Arthur Smith.
The Packers -- who, like the Falcons, are looking to move to 2-0 -- will wear their white tops with yellow helmets and pants Sunday in Atlanta.
