Falcons Looking to End 'Trendy' Defensive Schemes?
The Atlanta Falcons are hoping to be one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL this season.
According to a recently published article about what we have learned about all 32 NFL teams this offseason, as featured in Sports Illustrated, the Falcons' offseason moves have sent a clear message to fans: "The Falcons want to end trendy Vic Fangio–based schemes."
SI's reasoning was based on the fact that the Falcons have adopted a completely contrasting approach compared to what the Miami Dolphins' defensive coordinator has emphasized as a focal point in his schemes throughout the years.
"The running backs are making a comeback, and the Falcons are leading the charge, attacking Fangio-inspired defenses built on limiting downfield plays by running the ball more and using shorter throws," SI writes. "The Falcons now have running back Bijan Robinson, the No. 8 pick in the draft, to pair with Tyler Allgeier, who topped 1,000 rushing yards as a rookie."
Allgeier, a fifth-round pick in the 2022 draft, delivered an impressive performance during his rookie season. He concluded the year with 1,035 yards and three touchdowns while maintaining an impressive average of 4.9 yards per carry. His contributions played a crucial role in Atlanta's rushing attack, which ranked third in the league for average rush yards per game (159.9) during the 2022 season.
With the addition of Robinson, who amassed an impressive 3,410 yards and 33 touchdowns during his three seasons at Texas, the Falcons have formed an elite duo alongside Allgeier. This dynamic combination is poised to create a nightmare matchup for NFC South defensive coordinators. Their collective efforts aim to propel the Falcons to the playoffs, marking their first postseason appearance since 2017.
