Falcons Training Camp 'Really Competitive,' Says GM Terry Fontenot

The Atlanta Falcons have a good problem on their hands during training camp.
In this story:

The Atlanta Falcons have 90 players currently in training camp, but only 53 max will make the final roster.

With 37 cuts coming over the next couple of weeks, the Falcons are adopting a competitive edge, a welcomed sign from general manager Terry Fontenot.

“We love how camp has gone because it’s so competitive. It is really competitive. ... They have the right mindset. The good thing about that is the competitiveness is at an all-time high. It’s been good.” Fontenot said.

Given the fact that the Falcons have competitions at nearly every position within the depth chart and players who can play in multiple spots competing for playing time, Atlanta is building the right culture.

Fontenot, like many, probably isn't a fan of problems. But this is a good problem to have. Make the coaching staff and front office's job insanely hard come roster deadline day.

"It’s going to be a hard 53 to make and the players also understand that," Fontenot said. "It’s not just about what you can do in your particular position room, but what can you do in the kicking game? What can you do on fourth down? How can you find a role for yourself to help this team? But players understand that."

Iron is sharpening iron in Atlanta and players are only going to get better with the competition and pressure coming in from the second, third and even fourth units.

When the Falcons kick it into another gear with their preseason opener next week, it's only going to get more competitive.
