Titans Cut Taylor Lewan; Reunion With Falcons Coach Arthur Smith?

The Atlanta Falcons could use some offensive line help this offseason. Why not recently-cut Tennessee Titans free agent Taylor Lewan?
In this story:

Taylor Lewan is looking for a new home after the Tennessee Titans cut him today following nine seasons with the franchise.

Lewan will have discussions with several teams throughout free agency. But could one of those teams be with the Atlanta Falcons?

From a relationship perspective, no team makes more sense than the Falcons. The current Falcons staff has plenty of people familiar with Lewan, including Arthur Smith, who coached Lewan from 2014-20.

Lewan and Smith remain good friends outside the workplace, as the Falcons head coach was one of the very first guests on the three-time Pro Bowler's podcast, Bussin' With The Boys back in 2019.

The Falcons also could be looking towards the offensive line market in free agency with Kaleb McGary's contract expiring. The Falcons could look to keep or even use the franchise tag on McGary, but it would cost more than what the team would likely have to pay for Lewan.

However, the football fit between Lewan and the Falcons isn't seamless.

Lewan, the No. 11 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, has spent his entire career at left tackle. Just five picks before Lewan in the draft, the Falcons took Jake Matthews, who remains protecting the blindside for Atlanta, and should continue to do so in 2023.

This means that Lewan, an injury-prone player that has missed 30 games in the past three years, would have to essentially learn a new position. Moving from left tackle to right isn't like teaching rocket science to a baby, but there is some re-teaching that will need to be done.

Right tackles also don't get paid as much as those on the left side because of how important it is to protect the quarterback's blindside.

This means fans should expect Lewan to seek out other left tackle openings around the league before exploring the idea of playing with the Falcons. It probably won't happen, but the connections and need for an offensive lineman are too much for the Falcons to simply ignore.
