Giants Get a Lift in Latest MMQB Power Ranking Poll
The 5-8 New York Giants have won three in a row, their latest being a 24-22 victory over the Green Bay Packers. That puts them one spot closer to being in the hunt for a wild card berth and bumped the Giants up one spot in the latest MMQB power rankings poll.
Here’s what MMQB's Conor Orr had to say about this week's Giants ranking:
What a fun night in New Jersey, huh? What a throw by DeVito to Wan’Dale Robinson to set up the game-winning field goal. DeVito is now the third undrafted quarterback to win at least three of his first four starts. Despite a fumble by Saquon Barkley, the Giants – and that Martindale defense – never wavered. How about the way they were slapping footballs out of receivers’ hands in the end zone late in the game? This is a team that doesn’t let up.
For those who were questioning the legitimacy of quarterback DeVito’s play, the hype around this kid is real, and he put that on full display in the Giants' victory. Not only did DeVito complete 80 percent of his 21 pass attempts (a career-high) for 158 yards and a touchdown, but he also rushed for an additional 71 yards on ten attempts.
Moreover, this win marked the first time a Giants quarterback wasn’t sacked at all this season, a big development for a Giants offense ranked last among all NFL teams in sacks allowed per pass attempt (18.50 percent). DeVito's decisiveness and ability to sense the pressure against the Packers was impressive, as he was often weaving his way through openings while taking advantage of key gaps the defensive coverage left exposed (his longest run went for 26 yards).
Though the story circulating DeVito’s performance has left fans delighted with the youngster, it’s great to see Orr recognize the significant role this Giants defense continues to play in these wins and the leadership of Wink Martindale. Despite conceding over 20 points for the first time since their Week 10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the Giants defense played with a strong sense of purpose, coming away with six passes defended, two sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception.
With a three-game win streak under their belt, the Giants jumped from 25 to 24 on the MMQB rankings, remaining in front of the Jets, Titans, Raiders, Chargers, Commanders, Cardinals, Patriots, and Panthers.
Next week, the Giants take on a New Orleans Saints team coming off a big 28-6 win over the Carolina Panthers. The Giants record against the Saints, ranked 21st on the MMQB power rankings, is 17-14.
However, the Giants have only won two of their last six visits to the Caesars Superdome, with their most recent coming in 2021.
