Giants Hold Steady in MMQB Week 3 Power Ranking Poll

There's no change in the Giants' power ranking status, but the spotlight goes to a part of the team that has been the biggest disappointment so far.

In this story:

Maybe it's because the New York Giants, in their game against the San Francisco 49ers, kept it a game through three quarters, the score 20-12 at the time.

Or maybe the circumstances around the other teams had more influence than the Giants' circumstances. Whatever the case, New York holds steady at No. 23 in MMQB's latest power ranking poll for the second week in a row.

Notes Conor Orr of this week's ranking:

I do give the Giants credit for staying true to their defensive identity and bringing the house against Brock Purdy on their first drive to force a field goal. It showed, in glimpses, the ways in which they have been able to be at least slightly effective, given their extreme personnel disadvantage against teams like the 49ers. But this offense was never ever going to hold up against San Francisco long enough for the Giants to make Thursday’s contest a real game.

Orr correctly notes that the Giants offense has been just as problematic as the defense. From the inability to pass protect and sustain drives, the missed opportunities, and some of the play-calling decisions, it feels as though we've been transported back to 2021 rather than seeing this offense continue to build on what it started last year.

Many will point to the injuries--left tackle Andrew Thomas, left guard Ben Bredeson, and running back Saquon Barkley--as being factors in the offense's struggles. But worth noting is that those three were on the field in the Dallas debacle, yet the team couldn't muster up a single point.

The bottom line is there isn't necessarily one cause behind the Giants' struggles on offense. That said, an offense that was supposed to have been more explosive but which is currently averaging 14.3 points per game (30th in the league) and which is 8.2 points per game less than the league average just isn't going to get it done nor will it help with the team rising in any power ranking poll.
