Jets Hit the Road as Slight Underdogs to Denver
It's expected to be a tightly-contested affair when two one-win teams clash in a Week 5 intra-conference matchup.
Coming off their first win of the season, the Denver Broncos are a slight home favorite over the New York Jets according to SI Sportsbook's opening wagering line. The Broncos, who erased a 21-point deficit to defeat the Chicago Bears in Week 4, are giving 2.5 points to bettors who are willing to back the Jets at Mile High Stadium on October 8.
It's the fifth time in five weeks that the Green & White opened as a point-spread underdog. The Jets are 2-2 against the spread this season with both "wins" coming at home. Their lone road contest was a 30-10 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2.
Gang Green started last week as a 9.5-point 'dog to the Kansas City Chiefs. Although the Jets were unable to pull off the outright upset, they covered the number in a 23-20 setback to the reigning Super Bowl champions on Sunday Night Football.
In what's likely to give them a boost in bettors' minds, the Jets' offense looked competent under the direction of embattled quarterback Zach Wilson on Sunday. Playing to a 105.6 quarterback rating, Wilson shined brighter than 2022 NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes on the SNF primetime stage.
"He went out there and had a phenomenal game. One of the best games I've seen him play here. I'm proud of him," said Jets' starting center Connor McGovern about the highly-criticized field general.
Late Fumble Derails Jets' Upset Bid, Spoils Wilson's Bounce-Back Performance
Earlier in the day, Denver stopped its three-game season-opening slide by scoring 24 unanswered points in a 31-28 victory in Chicago. Although it did enough to win the game, the Broncos' defense allowed the winless Bears to record 471 yards and 26 first downs on offense.
Boding well for the Jets' offensive outlook in Week 5, Denver has surrendered the most yardage in the NFL thus far this season. The Broncos permit opponents to gain a league-high 7.05 yards per play and 461.5 yards per game.
On the money line, the Broncos are -133 favorites to win on October 8. The Jets are +110 as slight underdogs. The point total (over/under) opened at 42.5.
