Aaron Rodgers Makes Appropriate Garrett Wilson-Davante Adams Comparison
National Football League receivers Davante Adams and Garrett Wilson have more in common than the same jersey number.
The two prime pass-catchers have similar height and arm length, but Adams features a thicker frame. Wilson has the larger hand size.
In terms of route running, New York Jets' new quarterback Aaron Rodgers sees more similarity between Wilson and Adams, who is currently with the Las Vegas Raiders.
"His ability to kind of get in and out of his breaks. There’s another 17 [Davante Adams] I played with for a long time who does it better than anybody. The explosiveness, in and out of breaks, to the 17 here, is pretty similar," said Rodgers on the May 2 episode of the Pat McAfee Show.
Wilson still has plenty of work to do to catch up to the three-time All-Pro first teamer Adams in terms of on-field accomplishments, but the potential is there.
"Obviously Garrett [Wilson], he's a talented guy," said Rodgers. "I threw him a pass today [Tuesday]. I just kinda turned and was like ‘wow.’"
Rodgers' high praise for Wilson is certainly justified.
There's a reason why the Jets' WR1 won the 2022 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
Anyone who watched Wilson's freshman season saw the game-breaking talent on display despite the Jets' shaky quarterback play. He showed off his excellent release and diverse route tree on the way to becoming the team's first receiver to hit the 1,000-yard mark since 2015.
Averaging 13.3 yards per catch, Wilson totaled 1,103 receiving yards in 2022. In addition to four touchdown grabs, the Ohio State product gained first downs on 56 of his 83 receptions.
Wilson, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, recorded a catch in all 17 games as a rookie. He had 78 or more receiving yards in seven of his last 10 games.
It was only one season, however, and Adams has logged nine years in the league and earned six Pro Bowl selections.
"He's [Adams] been the best in the league for awhile now," said Wilson while speaking at the podium in Florham Park. "To even ne mentioned in the same sentence. I'm honored and know that I still got a long way to go."
It's worth noting that in his rookie season with Rodgers (2014), Adams, a second-round pick from Fresno State, caught 38 of 66 targets for 446 yards and three scores over 16 appearances.
