Another One! Randall Cobb Becomes Latest Former Packer to join Rodgers in Green & White
They walked off the Lambeau Field turf together one final time in Green Bay, leaving a lasting image of two friends ending an era.
The playing relationship between quarterback Aaron Rodgers and receiver Randall Cobb will move onto the next chapter with the New York Jets.
Gang Green is signing Cobb to a one-year contract, a move first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 32-year old veteran has spent 10 of his 12 NFL seasons with the Packers.
The 5-foot-10 pass-catcher has been a reliable target for Rodgers over the years. Cobb totaled 532 receptions for 6,316 yards and 47 touchdowns over the stints in Green Bay. Three hundred and seventeen of his catches resulted in Packers’ first downs.
Cobb was essentially relegated to a reserve role in 2022, making 13 appearances and three starts during the 17-game regular season schedule. He produced 417 receiving yards and one touchdown on 50 targets. The chain-mover recorded a first down on 19 of his 34 grabs.
The Packers used a second-round pick (No. 64 overall) on Cobb in the 2011 NFL Draft. The Kentucky product played with Green Bay for the first eight years of his pro career before heading to the Dallas Cowboys for the 2019 season.
Cobb was on the Houston Texans' roster during the 2020 campaign before coming home to Green Bay to rejoin Rodgers in 2021. The Packers reportedly brought Cobb back to satisfy Rodgers' request.
It seemed as if a Rodgers-Cobb reunion was inevitable, especially considering the receiver's familiarity with Jets' offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett's offense from the 2021 season.
Then, there's the friendship factor between the two and the clearly expressed respect they have for one another. When posting a goodbye to the Packers on his April 25 Instagram story, Rodgers included two photos of he and Cobb.
The 13th-year pro receiver has made 155 career NFL regular season appearances, including 87 starts. Cobb has made 625 catches, highlighted by 53 TD receptions, for 7,585 yards. Having served as a return specialist, too, he has totaled 10,778 all-purpose yards.
Cobb, who has three career return touchdowns (2 PR, 1 KOR), will turn 33 years old prior to the 2023 Jets' regular season opener.
The veteran receiver is the Jets' third free-agent signing of a former Packer this offseason. Gang Green inked Green Bay WR1 Allen Lazard to a four-year deal in March and agreed to a one-year contract with offensive lineman Billy Turner on Monday.
