Aaron Rodgers Trade Could Happen during 2023 NFL Draft According to Veteran Reporter
The Aaron Rodgers trade watch may finally have an end date, but longtime National Football League insider Peter King suggests that New York Jets’ fans will have to wait until the end of the month to celebrate.
With Rodgers having expressed his desire to play for Gang Green in 2023, the Green Bay Packers must agree to trade compensation for the 39-year old quarterback.
While the Jets have appeared unwilling to part with their first-round selection (No. 13 overall) in the upcoming NFL Draft, the Packers are likely requesting significant draft capital in exchange for the franchise signal caller.
As pundits continue to debate which side holds the most leverage in the Rodgers’ trade negotiations, King addressed the ongoing ordeal in his April 3 “Football Morning In America” column.
In the “10 Things I Think I Think” section of the NBC Sports published article, King proposed the idea that the Packers and Jets would complete a deal for Rodgers in between the first and second rounds of the Draft.
Since the Jets own back-to-back early second-round selections, a decision involving draft pick compensation would likely be made prior to Round 2 starting on April 28 in Kansas City.
The 2023 NFL Draft kicks off April 27 with 31 first-round selections.
From Peter King’s “FMIA” column:
4. I think the over/under date for the Aaron Rodgers trade is early evening April 28. That’s when the second round of the NFL Draft begins. That’s when the first of likely two or three draft choices to be exchanged would happen. The Jets have the 11th and 12th picks in round two, 42nd and 43rd overall, and I’d bet one of those picks will be the key to this trade getting done. Since Rodgers would be unlikely to be at the dawn of the Jets offseason program April 17, the big date is the 28th because that’s when it’s most realistic the first draft choice would be exchanged between the teams. Rodgers would be at the mandatory minicamp from June 13 to 15, and probably at some of the OTA offseason workouts between May 22 and June 9.
Last week, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer speculated that the Jets’ trade for the four-time NFL MVP could be completed sooner than later.
“I think it’ll happen sooner than people think because I don’t think things between the Packers and Jets are in nearly as bad a place as some seem to believe they are. We mentioned earlier in the week the rapport between GMs Joe Douglas and Brian Gutekunst from their time coming up as young road scouts,” wrote Breer in his latest SI.com mailbag.
