Another Jets' Offensive Lineman Goes Down vs. Eagles, 'Might Be a While'
The New York Jets have lost a starting offensive lineman for the second week in a row, although it's not known how serious the latest injury is.
Rookie right guard Joe Tippmann went down on the first play of the second quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium. It was after a 1st-and-10 incompletion when Tippmann needed to be helped off the field.
Favoring his right leg, the interior lineman was subsequently seen heading to the locker-room. The Jets initially listed Tippmann as questionable to return before downgrading the second-round draft pick to OUT after halftime. He has a thigh injury.
Versatile veteran Wes Schweitzer came on in relief on Tippmann, who was on the official injury report this past week but practiced fully on Friday. The Jets, who were trailing 7-0 when Tippmann exited, managed to finish the drive with a field goal.
"Tippmann is dealing with a thigh. Might be a while. We’ll get more," said Jets' head coach Robert Saleh following the 20-14 win over Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, it was Tippmann's versatility that allowed the Jets to reconfigure their offensive line after Week 2. When left tackle Duane Brown went to Injured Reserve, Gang Green got creative.
The team flipped right tackle Mekhi Becton to the left side and kicked right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker out to right tackle. Next, they slid Tippmann, a college center, into the starting lineup as the right guard. Tippmann, who was the No. 43 overall pick in the draft this past April, made four straight starts there prior to the injury.
Vera-Tucker was lost for the season in Week 5 at Denver, tearing his Achilles during the 31-21 win. Second-year pro Max Mitchell is currently manning the right tackle spot for the Jets.
