New York Jets' running back Dalvin Cook apparently won't need much time to adjust to his new home.

The four-time Pro Bowler, who had offseason shoulder surgery, worked out on the side with other injured Jets at Thursday's open training camp practice in Florham Park. After the session ended, Cook spoke about fitting into offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett's scheme, which is "going to give guys a chance to be explosive," as he addressed reporters from the podium.

"I think Hackett's got a great system just being around him for the last few days," said Cook, who was released by the Minnesota Vikings on June 9. "It's a system that I'm real familiar with, so I think we can go be explosive this year. I think you gonna see a lot of explosive plays out there."

Over the years, Hackett's variation of the West Coast Offense, which employs an outside zone running scheme, has been friendly to running backs with skill sets comparable to Cook's.

The 28-year-old Cook is scheduled to work out again at Friday's practice before returning home for the anticipated birth of his child.

"I got my baby due on Saturday, so I'll be going back home to go help with the labor," said Cook. "But I think I'll be practicing within the next few days. They reached out to my doctor and everything's right on schedule."

After missing four games in 2021 due to injury, Cook was available to make 17 starts for Minnesota last season. He posted his fourth consecutive 1,100-yard rushing campaign and scored 10 total touchdowns.

Having been an NFC North division rival of Aaron Rodgers, Cook said he's happy to have joined forces with the four-time NFL MVP in Green & White.

"Being on the other side of that for the last six years, I couldn't be on the other side no more. I got the chance to go join him and help him win. That was a big thing to come over here," said Cook.

As for his role within Gang Green's running back room, Cook hinted at a willingness to be a mentor of sorts.

"Just be Dalvin. Just be me. My number gets called, go be explosive. I'm the older guy in the room. Just share the knowledge. I got a lot of experience in this game," said Cook.
