Running Backs React to Jets' Dalvin Cook Addition
New York Jets' running backs Breece Hall and Michael Carter will have to share the workload with a four-time Pro Bowler moving forward.
By signing free agent Dalvin Cook, the Jets are adding a bell cow back to an already capable stable of ball carriers.
While Hall just returned to practice in a limited capacity today as he battles back from ACL surgery, the second-year pro will seemingly ease his way into action as Cook eventually picks up some of the slack.
"When he comes in, all of our reps might get lessened and we're gonna have to work him in," said Hall after Tuesday's practice session. "It's gonna make us do the most of what we can with our reps. It's gonna be fun."
Both Hall and Carter addressed reporters from the podium in Florham Park fewer than 24 hours after news of the signing surfaced.
"I can't worry about that," said Carter of the affect that Cook may have on his role. "The main thing is about getting better. That really the only thing that matters."
Set for his third season, Carter claims to have altered his outlook as part of a growth process.
"I probably would've asked to not talk today if this happened last year and that's where, like, me being a grown-up now. I feel like I'm at a place where we can speak on things and be honest," said Carter.
Since being selected in Round 4 at the 2021 NFL Draft, Carter has rushed for 1,041 yards and seven touchdowns on 261 career carries. After Hall's season ended in Week 7 due to the knee injury, Carter proceeded to lead the team with 114 rushing attempts, but saw a dip in ypc average last fall.
In Saturday's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, Carter saw first-quarter action along with fellow running back Zonovan Knight. The 5-foot-8 Carter rushed four times for 19 yards and gained 34 yards receiving on two catches.
With Carter, Knight and now Cook in the mix, Gang Green does not need to hurry Hall back into live game action.
"At the end of the day, the coaches and myself, we're gonna do the best thing in my interest. I'm not gonna put any certain timeline on this," said Hall after being activated from PUP.
The 22-year-old Hall, who was drafted at No. 36 overall in 2022, welcomes the competition that Cook's arrival will bring to the team's running backs room.
"It just adds another great guy to the room. It's going to be good for competition and it's gonna bring the best out of everybody," said Hall.
Cook has exceeded the 1,100-yard rushing mark each of his last four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, who released the former second-round draft pick on June 9.
