Jets' Back-up Plans Disappear as Aaron Rodgers Rumors Swirl
As Jets Country awaits confirmation on the Aaron Rodgers decision, the New York Jets’ backup plans are dwindling.
Should the reported Rodgers deal not work out, Gang Green won’t be left with many inspiring free agent options at the quarterback position.
After missing out on Derek Carr to the News Orleans Saints and pivoting to a full-court press for Rodgers, the Jets have learned that veteran signal caller Jimmy Garoppolo is no longer available.
NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo confirmed via Twitter that the Las Vegas Raiders have reached a deal to make Garoppolo the next Silver and Black starting quarterback.
The 31-year old Garoppolo, who entered the NFL as a second-round draft pick by the New England Patriots in 2014, has spent the last six seasons in San Francisco. Over 74 career games, the former Eastern Illinois star has completed 67.6 percent of passes for 14,289 yards. He has logged 87 touchdown passes to 42 interceptions.
Tom Pelissero, Garafolo’s NFL Network teammate, later shared the details of Garoppolo’s contract. The NFL insider claims the “three-year deal has a base value of $72.75 million.”
Meanwhile, Jets free agent quarterback Mike White has elected to head south.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported an agreement between White and the Miami Dolphins for a two-year contract worth as much as $16 million.
In four games for the Jets last year, White accounted for a 58.9 completion percentage while passing for 1,192 yards and three touchdowns. He suffered nine sacks and was intercepted four times.
White’s season was derailed in Week 14 when he took a vicious, but clean, hit from Buffalo Bills’ linebacker Matt Milano.
Showing toughness, White finished out the game, but missed the next two weeks due to the rib injury he sustained from Milano’s hit. He returned for a Week 17 loss at Seattle, but, after playing through significant pain, White was ruled out for the regular season finale in Miami.
