Jets Reportedly Make Two Personnel Moves on Thursday
New York Jets’ general manager Joe Douglas and his staff have been noticeably active thus far this offseason and the free agency signing period hasn’t even begun.
After Jets’ brass flew to California to meet with Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers earlier in the week, the team reportedly agreed to a trade while also releasing a starting player.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets created approximately $5 million in salary cap space by releasing veteran receiver and return specialist Braxton Berrios.
In addition to cutting ties with Berrios after re-signing him last offseason, New York reportedly made a trade that cannot be completed until the new league year officially begins next week. The deal sends a Jets’ seventh-round draft pick (2024) to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for safety Chuck Clark.
Berrios, who has played 65 games with the Jets since 2019, regressed as a receiver during the 2022 campaign.
After 37 receptions in 2020 and 46 catches in 2021, the 5-foot-9 Berrios pulled in only 18 passes last fall. His 8.1 yards per reception were the lowest of his career. The former Miami Hurricane accounted for a less-than memorable moment when he could not hang onto a possible go-ahead touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter in a 27-22 loss at Minnesota.
Clark, a sixth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, appeared in 96 games for Baltimore over six seasons. The run-stopping safety has made at least 66 tackles in each of the past four seasons.
The 6-foot Clark totaled 89 stops in 2022. One year earlier, he set a career high by logging 12 passes defensed. For his career, Clark has recorded 353 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, five interceptions and 32 passes defensed.
Acquiring Clark could signal that the Jets intend part ways with soon-to-be free agent safety Lamarcus Joyner.
