Jets Still Hovering in Top Half of SI's NFL Power Rankings

Gang Green dropped eight spots following loss at Dallas as Super Bowl hopes take a hit

They lost their future Hall-of-Fame quarterback in Week 1, but they haven't lost the complete faith of the Sports Illustrated NFL Power Rankings.

After falling to 1-1 on the season, the New York Jets fell five spots in the SI weekly rankings. Standing eighth out of 32 teams following a 22-16 overtime win over the Buffalo Bills, the Jets dropped to No. 13 overall in the wake of their 30-10 road loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Gang Green owns the third-highest ranking of the four AFC East teams. The Miami Dolphins sit at No. 5 overall followed by the Bills in the No. 6 spot. The Jets' Week 3 opponent, the New England Patriots, slipped all the way down to No. 24 overall thanks to an 0-2 season start.

After grounding the Jets, the Cowboys landed atop the power rankings at No. 1 overall followed by the No. 2 Philadelphia Eagles.

From NFL Week 2 Power Rankings: The Cowboys Are Sending a Message:

13. New York Jets (1–1)

Last week: loss at Dallas, 30–10

Next week: vs. New England

Zach Wilson had a nice throw to Garrett Wilson, which was emblematic of his arm talent but ultimately more of a tease for Jets fans. Wilson needs work and, probably, space and time to allow the gears to click. I still think this Jets team will be OK and can likely compete for a playoff spot. Dallas, like San Francisco, is going to dress down a lot of talented football teams this year and it was simply New York’s turn on Sunday afternoon. But, what we don’t see exactly is how. We have professed our faith in the offensive coaching staff, but if Wilson is unable to, say, look off a safety or have the wherewithal to just shed the football against this pass rush, it’s hard to know what kind of system can be put in place to save him.

Since losing Aaron Rodgers to an Achilles rupture, the Jets' Super Bowl LVIII odds have dropped significantly. SI Sportsbook currently lists Gang Green at +4500 or 45-to-1 to win it all. Heading into the Monday Night Football season opener, the Jets were the sixth-highest team on the board at +1600.
