Jets, Veteran Safety End Five-Month Relationship
An opening emerged in the New York Jets' defensive backs room on Saturday.
The Jets are releasing veteran safety Adrian Amos, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero who reported that the player and the organization "have mutually agreed to part ways."
The personnel move, which the team confirmed later on Saturday, comes one day before the Jets (4-7) host the Atlanta Falcons (5-6) on December 3 at MetLife Stadium.
Amos, a vested veteran, will be subject to waivers now that the trade deadline has passed. The ninth-year pro, who spent four straight seasons in Green Bay prior to landing in New York, initially joined the Jets in mid-June after presumed starter Chuck Clark suffered an ACL tear on the final day of OTAs.
The 30-year-old Amos has appeared in all 11 games thus far this season for the Jets, making three starts and totaling 23 tackles. He was credited with two stops in the team's 34-13 home loss to Miami on Black Friday, logging only seven defensive snaps at free safety.
Amos has appeared in 137 regular season games, including 125 career starts. He has made 10 interceptions and 28 tackles-for-loss.
Second-year pro Tony Adams's emergence as the Jets' starting free safety and Ashtyn Davis's increased contributions off the bench made Amos somewhat expendable. Adams has accounted for 51 tackles and one interception over nine starts. Davis has picked off passes from Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen this season.
The Jets currently rank sixth amongst NFL team leaders in pass defense (183.2 ypg). Meanwhile, as a whole, the Green & White defense limits opponents to 4.81 yards per play (fourth best in NFL).
