MRI Confirms Suspected Achilles Tear for Jets' Aaron Rodgers
The New York Jets likely knew what had just happened before the first half ended on Monday night at MetLife Stadium.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was carted from the sideline to the locker-room after suffering a suspected Achilles injury on his fourth offensive snap of the season opener against the Buffalo Bills.
"Concerned with his Achilles," said Jets' head coach Robert Saleh after the 22-16 overtime victory. "MRI is probably going to confirm what we think is already going to happen, so prayers tonight, but it’s not good."
Using a video review, former NFL team physician Dr. David Chao speculated Rodgers had ruptured his left Achilles tendon as he was sacked to the ground by Bills' defensive end Leonard Floyd.
Chao's video-based diagnosis along with the Jets' greatest fears were confirmed by an MRI on Tuesday morning. The 39-year-old Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, suffered a complete tear of the tendon, which effectively ends his first season with Gang Green after only one official pass attempt.
Former No. 2 overall draft pick Zach Wilson came on in relief of Rodgers on Monday and went 14-of-21 passing for 140 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
"Yeah, he’ll be the guy," said Saleh about how the Jets will fill the QB1 role moving forward.
Saleh is scheduled to speak with reporters at 3:30 pm ET on Tuesday afternoon.
