Ndamukong Suh Throws Subtle Shade at Gang Green
Don't expect Ndamukong Suh to join the New York Jets for his 14th National Football League season.
The five-time All-Pro defensive tackle appeared as a guest on the Rich Eisen Show last week and wasn't exactly high on Gang Green's chances to contend for a title in 2023.
First, Eisen, who also hosts NFL Network’s long-running “NFL Gameday Morning,” questioned Suh about possibly playing for a team during the upcoming season.
“I don't know yet,” said Suh. “It's got to be, honestly, the right situation. Last year, I waited until the middle of the year and I had a bunch of phone calls prior to that."
Suh, who claimed the San Francisco 49ers showed interest in him last season, landed with the Philadelphia Eagles in time for their run to Super Bowl LVII. The 6-foot-4 interior lineman made eight regular season appearances, logging 10 total tackles and 1.0 sack in 2022. He was active for all three Eagles’ postseason contests, accounting for two stops and three quarterback hits.
Eisen asked Suh about the Jets being an option in the decorated defensive tackle's future plans.
"I don't know," said Suh before the host continued the interview.
Eisen quickly shifted the conversation to the possible effect that an Aaron Rodgers acquisition could have on the outlook for Gang Green.
"When Aaron Rodgers and that deal transpires, do I believe they [the Jets] will be a Super Bowl contender? No," said Suh.
“That division [AFC East] is very, very difficult,” said Suh further explaining his rationale. “I don't even think if Aaron Rodgers hoes there, will they [the Jets] be the top team in that division.”
The 36-year old Suh is no longer a full-time starter, but his situational experience may prove valuable for a contender. The former Nebraska Cornhusker has logged 130 tackles-for-loss over a 199 regular season games (191 starts). He has recorded 7.0 sacks during a 15-game postseason career.
With Sheldon Rankins and Nathan Shepherd both leaving in free agency, Gang Green could use an accomplished veteran presence, like Suh, to rotate into the middle of its defensive line. The Jets recently added eighth-year NFL veteran Quinton Jefferson, but they're still likely in the market for another reinforcement alongside All-Pro defensive lineman Quinnen Williams.
