Robert Saleh: Veteran WR Corey Davis 'Looks Really Good'
Corey Davis isn’t going anywhere according to New York Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh.
“He’s going to be on this team,” said Saleh.
Rumored to be a cap casualty cut candidate, the veteran receiver received a vote of confidence from his coach on Friday.
“Corey (Davis) looks really good,” said Saleh, who was speaking at the Jets’ rookie minicamp press conference.
Highlighting the versatility present amongst the Jets’ receiving corps, Saleh explained Davis’ appeal.
“There’s a lot of grinding that goes on in the run game, the red zone, all those big boy catches that happen off the play action pass. Those things are where Allen [Lazard] and Corey excel,” said the third-year head coach.
The 6-foot-3 Davis, who signed a wealthy three-year contract prior to the 2021 season, belongs to a loaded receivers’ room that features reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson along with free-agent signees Allen Lazard and Mecole Hardman.
Then, there’s former second-round pick Denzel Mims and recently-added veteran Randall Cobb.
“The cool thing with what [offensive coordinator] Nathaniel [Hackett] is bringing, and this whole system, is there is a lot of versatility amongst the receivers in terms of being able to play multiple spots,” said Saleh. "To have a guy like Allen [Lazard] and Corey [Davis], then you add Garrett [Wilson] and Mecole [Hardman] with all the speed and all the competition that’s going to happen at that five-six spot, Randall [Cobb] and all that. It’s a really cool group of receivers and exciting to see how it shakes out."
Set to count more than $11 million against the Jets' $224.8 million salary cap allotment, Davis is coming off a 32-catch season during which he was targeted 64 times.
The 28-year old Davis, who was the No. 5 overall draft pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2017, has totaled 66 receptions for 1,028 yards and six touchdowns in 22 games since signing with the Jets. He has accounted for 15.6 yards per catch and 53 total first downs in Green & White.
“You can never have enough receivers,” said Saleh.
For 2023, it looks like Davis is one of those receivers.
