Two Jets' Starters Leave Sunday's Practice Injured
The injury bug is biting the New York Jets in recent days as two more veteran starters went down during Sunday's open practice in Florham Park.
First, linebacker Quincy Williams was banged up while playing pass coverage. After a Tyler Conklin catch, Williams left the field, under his own power, with trainers.
Shortly thereafter, left guard Laken Tomlinson exited team drills and did not return. Wes Schweitzer was his replacement.
Head coach Robert Saleh sounded optimistic about both players after practice.
"All indications look good. We’re just going to get more evaluation on them," said Saleh.
The Jets cannot afford to lose Williams for any extended time, especially with the linebacking corps having already been heavily affected by injury.
Hamsah Nasirildeen suffered a neck injury on the second play of the Hall of Fame Game. With the backup linebacker's availability in doubt, the Jets released the 2021 sixth-round draft pick on Sunday.
"I’m not going to get in the full detail yet until I get it all, but it would have been a couple of weeks, at the earliest," said of the third-year pro's status.
Along with Nasirildeen, Gang Green cut undrafted rookie linebacker Maalik Hall. The Division II product suffered "an injury that’s going to take a few weeks" according to Saleh.
"We’re down a lot of humans at linebackers, so we’re trying to restock that group to be able to handle the reps to practice and that’s about the gist of it," said Saleh.
While releasing the two young linebackers, the Jets added two more players at the position in corresponding moves. The Green & White officially inked Nick Vigil and Sam Eguavoen to the 90-man roster.
Meanwhile, veteran edge rusher Carl Lawson was a non-participant at practice today, but the cause doesn't appear to be serious.
"Carl, his back’s a little tight, so we just held him off for today," reported Saleh.
