Two Jets-Related Tweets that Made Me Stop Scrolling
Let's face it.
It's a dead period for National Football League activity as the players enjoy their short summer vacation before training camps kick off during the second half of July.
The news cycle, however, especially in this social media age of immediacy, never stops.
There's always a need for topics of conversation amongst a frenzied New York Jets' fan base with an insatiable appetite for content. That's where Twitter enters the equation.
Scrolling through the Elon Musk-owned social media app on a summer Tuesday in late June, I found two particular Jets-related tweets that can serve as conversation starters in your Green & White group chats.
Something Cook-ing?
Gang Green is on Dalvin Cook's mind and his Twitter timeline.
The four-time Pro Bowl running back created some social media buzz by sending out a quote tweet in response to Tyler Conklin's comments on NFL Network's Good Morning Football.
Conklin, a former teammate of Cook for four years with the Minnesota Vikings, responded to host Tom Pelissero's question on whether the Jets had "room" for the free agent ball carrier.
“There’s plenty of room. We got room for whoever wants to come help us win a Super Bowl," said Conklin from the set of the weekday morning show on Monday.
Twitter user @BoyGreen25 tweeted a video clip from Conklin's GMFB appearance and tagged Cook (@dalvincook) in the post. Cook proceeded to share the post with his followers, quote tweeting it after adding two "100" emojis at the top.
If the tweet is any indication, Cook wants to make a run at the Super Bowl and wouldn't mind reuniting with Conklin in the process.
At this point, Cook would be more of a luxury than a necessity for the Jets. Should Gang Green want to ease starter Breece Hall back into the flow with a light workload, Michael Carter, Bam Knight and fifth-round rookie Israel Abanikanda provide viable options.
With that said, adding an offensive player of Cook's caliber certainly wouldn't hurt a team in win-now mode.
Can the Jets and Cook figure out something that makes sense financially? TBD.
Why So Many Tweets?
Did a Jets' social media intern steal Woody Johnson's phone this month? The Chairman has tweeted some form of Green & White propaganda nearly every day in June and his latest is somewhat of a head-scratcher.
Along with an edited D.J. Reed hype video, Johnson posted a tweet that said, "Don’t forget this guy played at a Pro Bowl level last season too @D7_Reed."
It's good to see the owner's willingness to publicly recognize the players' achievements, but Twitter seems like an odd means of doing so.
First, few fans have forgotten the admirable job that Reed did during his first season with Gang Green, so no need for a reminder. The addition of Reed, along with drafting Sauce Gardner, helped the Jets rise to No. 4 overall on the NFL team defense leader board.
Despite noble intentions, Johnson's tweet is unnecessary. The owner is simply setting himself up for a social media roasting should Reed's play happen to slide in 2023.
It's also somewhat of an unsavvy business move as the tweet suggests that Reed is underpaid for his current level of performance.
Is Johnson hinting that Reed will soon receive a pay raise that brings his salary in line with Pro Bowl cornerbacks like Xavien Howard? Reed signed a three-year, $33 million deal while the Miami Dolphins locked in Howard for five years at an average annual value of $17.9 million.
Johnson would have been better served to compliment Reed in a closed doors team setting rather than a public forum that sometimes doubles as a cesspool. I haven't scoured Twitter looking for NFL owners' accounts, but I doubt Arthur Blank has tweeted out Desmond Ridder's rookie highlight reel.
It's just one man's opinion, but Johnson tweets too much about the team. Let's be honest who is following the former U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom for Jets' news anyway?
