Gang Green Extends Veteran Specialist on an Ironman Streak
The New York Jets locked up their long snapper on the second day of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Seventh-year pro Thomas Hennessy inked a four-year contract extension with Gang Green, a move that the team officially announced on Friday. The former Duke product is currently the longest-tenured Jet on the roster.
The 6-foot-2 Hennessy has not missed a game in six seasons wearing Green & White. Logging 98 consecutive special teams starts, the New York native has totaled 20 tackles and forced one fumble over the years.
Hennessy didn't not hear his name called during the 2017 NFL Draft, but signed an UDFA deal with the Indianapolis Colts, who subsequently dealt him to the Jets in August. Gang Green acquired the Don Bosco Prep local high school in exchange for safety Ronald Martin and agreed to a contract extension with Hennessy in 2019.
The long snapper has manned the position for almost the entirety of Brant Boyer's tenure as Jets' special teams coordinator.
Gang Green will have veterans throughout its kicking operation in 2023. Thomas Morstead has returned as the team's punter and presumed holder. Meanwhile, Greg Zuerlein re-signed in March and will handle the kicking duties for the second year in a row.
Although the recently-released Braden Mann took care of the punting in 2022, Morstead gained experience working with Hennessy during his 2021 stint as a Jet. Morstead agreed to a free-agent contract with the Green & White that was officially announced earlier this month. He spent the 2022 campaign in Miami.
