Jets Give Landing Spot to Former Titans' O-lineman
The New York Jets have swapped one offensive lineman out of a Practice Squad spot in favor of another.
Second-year pro Xavier Newman, who began the season on Tennessee's 53-man roster, agreed to a PS deal with the Green & White. In a corresponding transaction, the Jets sent veteran Adam Pankey packing. The team announced the personnel moves on Thursday as it prepares for a Week 5 road game against the Denver Broncos.
Newman, a 6-foot-2 offensive guard, became available earlier this week when the Titans released him from their active roster. He was up on gameday each of the past three weeks although he saw a minimal number of snaps over that span.
The 24-year-old Newman initially entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He spent much of his rookie season on the Titans' Practice Squad before getting the call-up for a Week 17 game against Dallas. As a collegian, Newman made starts in five different seasons for Baylor.
Pankey, who kicked off his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers in 2017, spent the majority of the 2022 campaign as a Jets' PS player. He last appeared in a regular season game in 2021 with the Dolphins.
Newman is one of only two offensive linemen currently enlisted on the Jets' 16-player Practice Squad. Jason Poe, a small-school guard who was with the 49ers in 2022, is the other.
Two days earlier, the Jets released offensive tackles Cedric Ogbuehi and Chris Glaser from their PS deals. Meanwhile, fourth-round rookie Carter Warren, who began the season on IR, entered into his 21-day practice activation window on Wednesday.
