Jets Make Six Roster Designations on Training Camp Report Day
Not everyone was ready to roll when both rookies and veterans reported to the New York Jets' facility for training camp on July 19.
Three offensive skill position players and a sixth-round rookie defensive back all landed on the physically unable to perform list, commonly known as PUP. The Active/PUP designation was created for players who are physically unable to perform football services due to football-related injuries.
Running back Breece Hall, receiver Randall Cobb, tight end C.J. Uzomah and versatile DB Jarrick Bernard-Converse will all count against the Jets' 90-man preseason roster, but won't be allowed to practice until removed from PUP.
Meanwhile, safety Chuck Clark and receiver Diontae Spencer have moved to Injured Reserve (IR) status. Due to injury, these players are not immediately available to the team.
In Clark's case, the veteran will be unavailable for the entire 2023 season after sustaining a torn ACL during the final week of OTAs.
Players on IR can be "designated to return," but players placed on Injured Reserve prior to the close of the waiver period following final roster cutdowns are ineligible to return during the season.
Hall, Cobb, Uzomah and Bernard-Converse will all likely return at some point in the coming weeks.
Hall and Cobb are still working their way back from surgery, but have been reportedly progressing on schedule.
"I feel like he [Hall] won't need to be limited during training camp even though we still will, just to be conscientious and cautious with him," said head coach Robert Saleh during OTAs.
Uzomah injured his leg on June 9, the final day of Phase 3 OTAs. Former NFL team doctor David Chao, who launched Sports Injury Central (SICscore.com), posted encouraging analysis to Twitter.
"Just saw some video that shows less twisting than change of direction. Likely quad strain which is way better than other possibilities!" said Chao in a tweet.
Uzomah and quarterback Aaron Rodgers appeared to develop somewhat of a connection during OTAs. That rapport is worth watching once Uzomah returns to practice.
As for the 33-year-old Cobb, he has played with Rodgers in 10 of his 12 NFL seasons.
"I still feel like he’s got a lot left in the tank," said Rodgers of his longtime teammate during OTAs. "He’s dealt with some injuries the last couple years, but obviously Joe [Douglas] and his staff really value his character."
